Throwback Thursday: Pantry Raid

No, you read that wrong - p a n t R y raid.

I'm great about planning out my meals for when I'm at the office, but for some reason everyday when I get home I turn into a snack monster just like our buddy Homer here.

omnomnom

Dan  does it too.

While I don't think boredom is what leads us to impulsive snacking, I do think the stress of a long day of work contributes to the problem. There's something comfortable about the crunch of a tortilla chip combined with homemade guacamole the same way there's serious satisfaction found in a bowl of ice cream to finish off the evening.

Both of those scenes are all too common in our household and starting today I have two solutions to keep the mindless chomping at bay.

Immediate Fix #1

Drink water when I feel the need to snack. If I still need to snack, drink more water. Simple.

Immediate Fix #2

Limit snacking to fruits and veggies only. Look at this beautiful bowl of raspberries that took only 5 minutes to pick from my backyard. There's no excuse why I can't step out the back door and pick some berries and let the pretzels sit safely in their bag in the pantry.

What about you? Share some of the ways you avoid snacking before dinner, snacking in the middle of the day or just keeping cravings out of sight, out of mind?

Short and sweet action plan: Water, fruits, veggies.

Want to see something else short and sweet?

Today's Throwback Thursday is brought to you by a little girl who has always loved to browse the fridge, pantry or snack drawer and has resolved to make a change.

Oh my gosh- cutest photo! I love it. I am also very jealous of those beautiful berries. I have tried to curb my snacking a lot more lately as well. Instead of ice cream, Noah and I each have half a grapefruit with dessert (sometimes sprinkled with brown sugar if we're feeling luxurious!). Snacks at work are hard boiled eggs, roasted beets (they last a decent amount of time), hummus and carrots, strawberries, or bananas and almond butter. It is nice sometimes to get some protein in while snacking because I feel like that really hits the spot if I'm actually hungry. If not, fruits and veggies are the best bet!

I manage snacking by eating small meals every 3 hours (in the morning, it's more like every 2 hours). Bananas are my favorite healthy bite- it's nature's portable snack. Sometimes I'll do a 1/4 cup of trail mix in the afternoon (I'm loving this one from Trader Joe's with cashew, almonds, pistachios, dried cranberries, and chocolate chips). It's easier to nip mindless eating in the bud when blood sugar is kept in check.

Mindless snacking has ALWAYS been my biggest downfall. The best way I've found to combat it is by simply not having it in the house to begin with. Yes, there are times when I REALLY want something salty and crunchy, but if it's not in the house, I am forced to choose something else or simply let the craving pass. This works mostly because I'm too lazy to leave the house and go to the store.

Such a cute picture and I LOVE raspberries! My worst time for snacking is after my girls go to bed and I am watching TV or blogging its super hard not to just grab something and eat it. Great tips :)

haha so it is a running joke at my grandparents' house that EVERY TIME I show up to visit the first thing I do is open the fridge to see what snacks they have. My gpa is sure to point it out.

ha-ha that's what I do at mom and dad's too. I need an alarm, or child locks, or both. It's auto-pilot!

TV + Snacking go hand in hand! I'm usually good about not eating at the computer to avoid sticky keys, but then I have the laptop open all hours of the day!

Great job with keeping it out of the house! I have a grocery store within a two minute walk, so when the craving hits it's easy to grab my wallet, shoes and go. #snackerproblems

1/4 cup of trail mix is impossible for me! Do you bag your servings individually or do you really have the self control to close the bag? that's something I'd be jealous of! :)

There's so many berries outside, those were all picked without moving my feet, just up and down the 5ft high bushes! I'll have to pick them quick before the squirrels get them.

I'm the worst at grapefruit - I spray it everywhere, but I love it At work I've been mixing vanilla protein powder and water and it seems pretty helpful. I (Dan too) just have to get away from walking into the kitchen at home!

What works best for me is to GET BUSY with something. As long as I'm not truly hungry, I can easily distract myself from eating.
