I Probably Haven't Seen It...

If there's a movie you think everyone in the world has seen, chances are that I probably haven't seen it.

Of all the social things I'm most insecure about, it's this.

I can fake my way through almost any kind of conversation except for when somebody quotes a movie and all of a sudden - everyone is chiming in about their favorite parts and there I am trying to just giggle and awkwardly pretend like I have seen that part of the movie. It's a really annoying thing about me to some guys who I've tried to date because if all they do is quote movies - I really have no side in the conversation (not that I've ever dated a guy like that).

We could blame a few things for why I don't have any depth in movie knowledge.

:: My family didn't have cable until I was in high school.
:: I was always at a sports practice while I was growing up.
:: I preferred to watch The Lion King 389 times rather than watch any other movies.
:: I chose studying over watching movies on Sundays. #NerdAlert
:: "Watching a movie" with a boy is/was really just an excuse to make out. #NotSorry
:: I currently only watch an hour of TV per week (looking at you, Game of Thrones)
:: Just like my mom, I forget sometimes if I've seen a movie or not.
:: Let's be real, I can't keep my attention fixed on something for 90-120 minutes straight.

Yes, I've seen the Harry Potter movies and yes I've seen Mean Girls - also Step Brothers and Billy Madison. But there's some others that I'm sorry - I just haven't seen and I won't know what you're referencing when we're in a big group and everyone is laughing except for me.

So, friends - what are some of the must watch movies on your list (preferably that are on Netflix) that I need to add to my list? Or are movies a thing of the past and I should really be spending my time on series like Mad Men and Downton Abbey? (I have seen Breaking Bad & House of Cards!)

Anything goes - just assume that I've never seen any movies ever and still own a VCR. Trying to stock up a must-see list for the rainy days we're sure to have still this spring in Portland.

I am cheating with a confessions/cry for help here. Thanks as always!

Lmao! I feel the same way about TV shows. I'm only on Season 3 of How I Met Your Mother (via Netflix) and only recently watched my first episode of Parks & Recreation. I used to watch a lot of movies but haven't watched much recently. Have you watched "The Sweetest Thing" yet? It's old, but still funny.

I didn't get cable till High school and we didn't get our first real computer with internet until I was in junior high. I just saw About Time it is really funny. I also love The Time Travelers Wife. The Notebook. And Obviously anything with Rachel McAdams.

I am totally with you on this. I havr a talent for astounding people with the line "no, I haven't seen that movie." Oddly enough I jave seen that episode of modern family from the above gif of Phil.

girrrrl you've come to the right place because my husband and i are walking TV guides. i dont know what's on american netflix but i assume it's way better than the garbage version we have in canada.

tv shows: the shield, dexter, 24, banshee, suits, blacklist, breaking bad, scandal....so much more but these will do for now.

movies: pacific rim, die hard 1-4, red, pulp fiction, star wars (not the prequel crap), blade runner, aliens, predator, shawshank redemption...oh, so many more awesome movies.

I'm so with you girlie!!!! I haven't seen MOST of the must see movies out there. The Patriot, NOPE! Tombstone, NOPE! Boondock Saint, NOPE!

YOu need to watch downton abbey. It's so good! So so so so good!

And NCIS!

i was also ALWAYS at a sports practice. i honestly thing that it fuels my aversion from TV.. i hardly watched it growing up, and oftentimes feel like a slob when i watch too much of it now... unless it's sports games of course :)

Hah! I actually just wrote a whole post about this listing all the "big deal" movies I haven't seen. People look at me like I'm a creature from the black lagoon when I tell them I've never seen Home Alone or Harry Potter. I feel you, girl! But as long as you've seen Mean Girls, I think you're alright ;)

I work at a video store so obviously movies are my life...

The Godfather - if you have not seen this...drop everything you are doing, find this movie and watch it.

Kristen said...

we didnt have cable growing up.. heck, we dont even have it now. i dont like a lot of the 'classic' movies people say to watch (^^ godfather, not my cuppa tea sorry Lora!) and I prefer to watch P&P all the live long day with an occasional swap to a disney movie ha. but my husband and best friend could quote movies like its their job, and even if I have seen the movie ten times, I wont remember it. I have a really bad memory for things like that, I can barely quote P&P or beauty & the beast (unless it's on) and we all know how many times I have seen those.
buuutttt cause you asked.
my faves are:
pride and prejudice
beauty and the beast
serendipity

haha!

I'm an idiot with movie quotes. Joe will say one and I'll laugh like I know what he is talking about. Then he will say "you have no idea what that is from, do you?" Guilty!

Hey Jess!! Oh I totally get it! Movies, sometimes but with these common day shows that everrryone knows about and talks about, I have not watched. They might as well be speaking a different language. lol! Great post girl! :)

I know no movie quotes except for Pretty Woman and Legally Blonde (go figure).

Pamela {Sequins and Sea Breezes} said...

Girl you are not alone! Even for movies I've seen, unless I've seen them 100 times I usually don't remember specific quotes from them. I hate going to the movies so I almost never see a movie unless its in the comfort of my own home. And oh yeah, I've never seen The Notebook. I'm pretty sure people would say that makes me less of a girl but oh well. Maybe one day!

I totally feel the same way for "classics" gone with the wind, charlie and the chocolate factor, wizard of oz all those and honestly I have no desire to see them! I blame it on growing up with russian parents lol!! But hey I'm fine with all the movies that I have seen!

That awesome you only watch tv an hour a week. I watch way more then that b/c my hubby is a tv junky. When he not home the tv isn't on.

As long as you've seen HP and Mean Girls, nothing else matters. :)
I didn't have cable until I was in high school either! OH THE HUMANITY!

Tami said...

I'm the SAME way. Partly because my mom was really picky about what movies I was allowed to watch when I was younger and partly because now I just hate to sit still for that long! And people act like its the end of the world when OMG YOU HAVENT SEEN ANCHORMAN?!????

I spend so much time watching tv that I could help you so much! I used to watch a lot of movies but now I just fall asleep. It's the old lady in my I guess.

Let's see, movie wise, I recommend Breakfast Club because it's a classic, Empire Records because it's one of the greatest movies I've ever watched,Almost Famous because it's always left me wondering if Kate Hudson is her character in real life or not, and the Great Gatsby for something new.

Tv shows, well my favs are Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Justified, The Walking Dead, and Two Broke Girls.

That's all you need in life. Sorry I just wrote the longest comment ever.

I am the same way! Just never really been a movie buff and don't really enjoy going to the theater.

Tracey said...

I agree with some of the other comments, as long as you have seen Mean Girls you are set.

However, I must say Orange is the New Black is a pretty addictive series and if you want a good laugh watch Bridesmaids.

Him & Me (But Mostly Me) said...

Woooah so many comments. I come to this too late! lol

My favorite movie is Evita (with Madonna). Might be because I'm from Argentina... oh, maybe I need to watch that before I leave. Haha.

Also - definitely watch Downton Abbey it's awesome!

haha- I always forget if I've seen a movie or not. I'm really bad with songs too...someone will ask me who sings a certain song, and even though I know every word to it- I have no idea who sings it!

Joey Hodges said...

While I've seen a lot of movies--chances are I haven't actually seen THE END of them. Every single movie I ever tried to watch at home, I fell asleep in. So I'm really no help here. I also often feel so awkward when people pull out movie quotes (which my husband does constantly) because I can't MEMORIZE freaking movies!

Lauren said...

I don't retain movies well at all, so even if I've seen it, I can't quote it. You need to see Anchorman and The 40 Year Old Virgin, though. And watch the American version of The Office. At least the first four seasons. After that, it isn't as good.!

MakeMeUpMia said...

You're not alone! My husband and his brothers sit and quote movies all day. I don't understand how they remember it all! There are movies I've seen so many times, but I can't do that. At a bridal shower recently we played a game that had quotes from movies, you had to name the movie. I got ONE out of like 20!

Kelci Lately said...

I love movies, but I love TV series even more! You've got to watch Orange is the New Black, Scandal, and Game of Thrones is my absolute favorite.

brooke lyn said...

i just don't have the attention span to sit down and watch movies, but I can bang out 14 episodes of a show in one sitting. it doesn't make sense.

Kasey Lynne said...

Sam's family quotes random movies all day long, and I never know what they're talking about. It's just awkward.

Helene in Between said...

I loooove movies. but it's hard to pick a favorite. just going to throw out random ones here but: pride and prejudice (keira knightly version), anchorman, the sandlot (one of my faves of all time), and any musical- yes I am a nerd.

Kenzie Smith said...

Ha ha this is too funny, our posts are really similar! Well, obvious I am going to have to add Gossip Girl to your list of must watch :D Some more would be Dexter, Orange is the New Black, Burn Notice, Lie to me, Sherlock, Weeds... I could go on for days and days. Happy Wednesday gorgeous!

lil desiqua said...

Haha I'm the exact same way for all the reasons you listed above!! Everyone would be home watching TV or playing video games and I was either playing sports or doing schoolwork. And I also only watch Game of Thrones on the regular, though I do like New Girl, Mindy Project, and True Blood. And basically any movie with Rachel McAdams or Julia Roberts.

Melissa Nicole said...

you're killin me smalls! (sandlot reference)

you need to watch Clueless if you haven't seen it. it's on netflix.

Motormouth Macey said...

I feel that same way when people start talking about TV shows! We didn't have a TV growing up, and I haven't had one since moving out. I do have Hulu and Netflix though, so every so often I binge watch something and all the sudden I get so many references that I didn't even know were references in the first place!

Now when it comes to movies, I'm allll about them! I love movies. I own a ton (joined the Disney movie club right out of college #notsorry) and since I had years of no TV, used to have movies playing in the background on my laptop so I didn't feel alone.

Some cult classics:
The Goonies, The Sandlot, The Breakfast Club, Can't Buy Me Love, anything Rock Hudson and Doris Day, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Bridget Jones' Diary, anything Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, Colin Firth and/or Hugh Grant.

I watch so much stuff, it's embarrassing.

Off the top of my head, some of my favorite shows are:

Lost

The Office

Scandal

The Following

The Americans

The Tudors

And basically any trash reality show, I'm embarrassed to say.

as far as TV....Homeland is straight up addicting and I mean....you've like seen Mean Girls right? I feel like the blogging world revolves around it ;-)

Amy @ Living n Learning said...

Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, and Footloose (the original but the remake is good too!) are movies you definitely have to watch!

Rachel Sedaker said...

Okay, so I've seen a lot of movies (teenage dream was to become filmmaker), but I still get annoyed with guys who spend all their time quoting movies- many of which I haven't seen (they're usually what I call bro movies or dick flicks- movies like Step Brothers, The Hangover- which I've seen but didn't like, anything with Will Farrell), but they'll even quote movies I have seen and I still won't get the reference- because I don't care to memorize every line of every movie I have ever seen. I also just plain hate it when people quote movies- it's a pet peeve of mine. So it's ok if you don't get it- a lot of us don't. A lot of us reserve our brain matter for more interesting information :)

In order to give movie recs, I need to know what you like :)Who cares what you're "supposed" to have seen. :P

Honestly props to you for only watching an hour of TV a week. I'm addicted to so many shows that it's a full time job trying to keep up before my DVR hits 100%.

In terms of movies... watch Serendipity - it's my favourite cheesy love story and has some pretty fab one liners.

Also, and I'm totally assuming you live under a rock here... you have to watch The Grinch with Jim Carrey. Doesn't matter what time of year it truly is an amazing movie.

Lastly, movies targeted towards men can sometimes be really great to watch. Any guy Ritchie movie, Captain America, Batman etc

Katie Elizabeth said...

I'm the EXACT same way! My husband always shakes his head when I tell him I haven't seen a particular movie. I've always been more into TV.. I can binge watch TV like no one's business but I probably watch 5 movies/year (and they're all Christmas ones). I'd say Mad Men is a really good show, in its final season right now and we watched Friday Night Lights this fall and loooved it!

i feel ya --i have ZERO movie knowledge! the problem is that my boyfriend as seen everything and often talks in quotes and I almost never what the heck he is saying. #languagebarrier

I am soooooo that annoying movie quoting person! I can't help myself, I love movies! Here are my picks:

Center Stage (dancing, so duh)
The Sandlot ("For..evv...er")
Labyrinth (Bowie)
Star Wars originals (may not be your cup of tea, but to be a well rounded moviegoer, you have to watch)
Lord of The Rings (same)
Black Hawk Down (so good)
Princess Bride (classic)
Fight Club (only Brad Pitt movie I've really liked)
Schindler's List (one time watch for most people)
The Way We Were (Redford & Streisand)

...so many more! OK, so I'm a movie fanatic.

Haha oh man, I know what you mean...
I think the first time that I blatantly noticed that I was that person who was out of the show-loop was when everyone in Gr. 4 (4!!) was watching Friends & I had no clue what they were on about!! I also tend to forget about certain movies I've seen before too, but ehh, just means more movie options for future movie-nights I guess...? I did just see the LOTR movies earlier this year though, felt pretty movie-goer-proud about that one ;)

My movie-suggestion-vote to you goes to: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - relatively new but still so so good! :)

I'm a huge movie fan. If you like British humor at all, you should watch the cornetto trilogy with Simon Pegg. It's three sort-of-related movies, starting with Shaun of the Dead. They are SO funny.

Brianne said...

Haha I'm the same way! I can't count the number of times my ex would start talking about a movie & then be like "...you haven't seen it have you..." The thing is I feel like I have seen/own a ton of movies. Apparently just not the ones that everyone else has seen.

Amanda said...

Game of Thrones is the only TV show we can keep up with. We'd like to watch The Walking Dead too, but we need to catch up on the current season.

As for movies to watch, Pride and Prejudice is my absolute favorite (but I have a fascinations with that time period). Here are a few I like to watch: Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Breakfast Club, Gentleman Prefer Blonds, My Fair Lady, Memoirs of a Geisha, Crazy Stupid Love, Hope Floats, Dirty Dancing... i could go on and on.

Unknown said...

I'm in the same boat - except I do watch the movies I just can't remember the quotes... I'll be like, well that sounds familiar..... and thats all.
