June Summary

Buh-bye June!

When it began, June had promise of easy work days and relaxation at home. Just a few days in, this month turned gloomy and has proved to be one of the most consistently stressful months at work I've been a part of.

New responsibility, more work with less resources and shorter deadlines don't get me down though, these factors force me to work smarter, involve my teammates and get plenty of support from the people around me. This includes family and friends.

Here they are, the Top 5 Moments from the month!

1. I'm still very proud to be a second-time Tough Mudder and I owe you the official Oregon 2013 video so you can get a taste for how hilly the course was!

2. Dan and I love our little Holly girl and we've been so impressed with her personality. She's had no accidents, she's adventurous, she sleeps all the way through the night, she likes both her wet and dry food, and she hasn't taken a swipe at our Betta fish (yet).

I only wish she'd hold still for iPhone photos like this more often, but we're working on that!

3. This TED Talk about Power Posing has really changed my outlook on the way I carry myself at work and how I've managed to boost my confidence in difficult situations. I feel it paying off and can see how it can help anyone out there.

4. I still have 21 miles to run to complete this month, which is only 7 per day and an easy goal to hit in comparison to many end of the month gaps to close I've had in the last 3 and a half years of running 100 miles a month. It's been a miracle so far to get 79 and I contribute my success to my Morning Routine.

5. I can't write this post without remembering that it was just this month that I met Dan's parents for the first time. It doesn't seem possible that it was within the past 30 days, but time flies!

Thanks for sticking around this month, I'm thinking July will be just as crazy with work travel (!!!) and watching Holly get older.

I'm looking forward to it!

Throwback Thursday: Blog Birthday

Hello and happy Thursday!

One day closer to the weekend and it's supposed to start heating up and feeling like summer in Portland.

I want to use today to congratulate myself and my blog for consistently posting now for an entire year! The very first published post was last April, but the last week in June is when Babbling Brookelyn and I decided to stop stalking blogs and start contributing. Okay, so maybe we still stalk - she's better at stalking than I am.

My blogging has taken a turn for the better since I got a DSLR camera and started commenting on other blogs, but I really feel like what's kept me here is the support I have from my readers. Those who I know in real life are amazing for support they provide while those who only know me by the words that I type fascinate me for sticking around and making me feel like I have something worth sharing.

I think it's only right that today's Throwback Thursday highlights some of my very first posts in June of 2012 where we can all suffer through my iPhone photos.

A time before I had a cute blog template, before I used instagram, before I knew about cute photo apps with text and collages.

Most importantly, a time before I really knew what my blogging 'voice' was.

Enjoy!

Welcome Home, Holly Kitty!

Ahh! I'm so excited.

Sunday after Dan and I enjoyed pedicures in the neighborhood, we decided to walk into the same pet store where we got Tiger six months ago. We were just stopping in to see the two shop cats, Stella and Jackson, and also to see if the turtle, iguana and other friendly furries were in there and hoping for a visit.

We turned the corner from the fish room and saw none other than this cute little face staring us down.

Between constant eye contact with us, nuzzling up against her cage and the fact that everyone who saw her (inside and outside of the store) stopped by to "awwww" we were hooked. We didn't walk into the store with the intention of adding a member to the family, but we took a day to discuss it and decided that we were ready for  a little kitty to love in our lives.

Monday night we picked up this little cutie, added a bag of dry food, a few cans of wet food, a litter box, some litter and a scoop! She's officially part of the family!

I haven't been around kittens much but Dan grew up with plenty of felines in his family.

I'm getting used to not being able to use verbal commands as you can with dogs, understanding that a wagging tail isn't a good sign and that a little baby needs all kinds of love and attention. Attention that we are more than happy to give!

She's a wild and rambunctious one - as I type this she's ripping around the house, jumping over Dan, bravely climbing the legs of the table and pouncing on mice and feathers like it's her day job.

When she's ready to snuggle though, she snuggles hard.

Pretty soon she'll need to get acquainted with the two golden sisters and hopefully it will go something like this!

I have a feeling this little girl will teach me a lot about myself and I'm looking forward to seeing Dan be a "Dad".

Welcome home, Holly!

TED Tuesday: Get More Sleep

Ladies, what do you think about joining me in my mission to sleep my way to the top?

And by sleeping I really do mean getting the best night's rest possible, no strings attached.

I love this TED Talk because it glorifies one of the most wonderful things Dan and I cherish on weeknights and weekends -some quality Zz's.

Through college, I lived off of short naps and craved those long weekends where I could shut down my brain and re-group on my sleep. I wasn't losing sleep because I was out having a great time, I was losing sleep because my day was full of classes and practice and my part-time job.

At that point in my life I didn't have any other time to cram in my homework other than in the ugly hours of the night. I'd force myself to stay awake by doing laundry at 1am, brewing coffee, setting an alarm for every 40 minutes, just in case I accidentally fell asleep while cramming for my next big exam. I'd hunt out the best late night coffee shops and would even become a regular at these places, occasionally scoring a cute guy's phone number out of the deal who was the same kind of 'crazy' that I was.

Because I was still successful and "able to function" with this snooze schedule, I fooled myself into believing that little sleep made me highly productive. It was a poor illusion that I had where I truly believed that those who slept in on weekends, didn't take 8am classes and didn't have bags under their eyes were fools for all the hours they were missing out on.

No Sleep Til' Brooklyn was my jam.

As I've grown older I understand and appreciate the beauty and benefit from a wonderful night's rest. My skin looks better, my eyes are brighter, I'm enthusiastic, I'm driven and all the way around I'm an easier person to communicate with. As a Type A woman driven to make a difference in my world, sleep deprivation is my very worst enemy and Dan's done a great job of getting me into that routine. We are in bed by 9pm most nights and still get 7-8 hours, depending on whether we decide to run or rest in the morning.

More sleep, less caffeine, better decisions and healthier outlook. It's easy.

So thanks for the great reminder, Arianna. We could all use a better night's rest and an opportunity to shut down our engines.

Happy Birthday, Brother!

Matt, today is your 29th birthday and I suppose you need some attention, even though Luxembourg just had a national holiday to celebrate the occasion!

You've always been an influence in my life and I'll never stop looking up to you.

You've done everything you can to work hard, make a great example of yourself, challenge the process, encourage others to be great and to make life easier for yourself and the family you'll have someday.

I look up to you because you refuse to take 'no' for an answer. You have the courage to stand up for what you believe and you know that if you push hard enough you can produce results.

You understand that building strong relationships is one of the most important things you can do, and you're really good at it. I think it's because you're a loyal, confident, funny and witty person. More importantly you know that a BBQ always takes good friends and makes them great friends.

You understand the importance of balance in your life and you make the effort to take vacations, spend money on experiences and spend time with those who you love. Your ability to dream like a child at the age of 29 impresses me, and inspires me to live a more carefree life.

Other than your accomplishments in your career, you've done some pretty amazing things. Like a double major on an academic scholarship, going to grad school while working full time. Like travelling solo to Europe, just to explore, and later moving your entire life there just because you craved the adventure. You made it to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, rocking a mohawk. What's not amazing about that?

I miss you every single day. I don't play pool as often as I should, ride the bike you bought me like I promised that I would or even take vacations like you encourage me to, but I still know that you're proud of me and that you're always just a phone call away.

You have a 'special' lady who thinks you're pretty remarkable, so please take care of her and continue to show her the creative, intelligent, witty, carefree, spontaneous, games-and-prizes Matt you've always been and I know you always will be.

Happy Birthday, MattMan! I'm happy you turned out okay.

Friday Links to Love

Hey guys, did you hear that you can now capture and share mini-videos on instagram? R.I.P Vine.

I hope this doesn't mean that my 45 minutes I currently spend on insta will turn into an hour to view all of the clips. I also hope I don't try to be all artsy or cute with the new capabilities. I'm just getting used to text and arrows on my photos!

This week has been a long one. From delivering some bad news in a meeting yesterday to continually adding work to my desk, I've pretty much had all I can take.

You're in luck though, because that means I got all of these links for you!

Go on, you can be excited!

Throwback Thursday: Pantry Raid

No, you read that wrong - p a n t R y raid.

I'm great about planning out my meals for when I'm at the office, but for some reason everyday when I get home I turn into a snack monster just like our buddy Homer here.

omnomnom

Dan  does it too.

While I don't think boredom is what leads us to impulsive snacking, I do think the stress of a long day of work contributes to the problem. There's something comfortable about the crunch of a tortilla chip combined with homemade guacamole the same way there's serious satisfaction found in a bowl of ice cream to finish off the evening.

Both of those scenes are all too common in our household and starting today I have two solutions to keep the mindless chomping at bay.

Immediate Fix #1

Drink water when I feel the need to snack. If I still need to snack, drink more water. Simple.

Immediate Fix #2

Limit snacking to fruits and veggies only. Look at this beautiful bowl of raspberries that took only 5 minutes to pick from my backyard. There's no excuse why I can't step out the back door and pick some berries and let the pretzels sit safely in their bag in the pantry.

What about you? Share some of the ways you avoid snacking before dinner, snacking in the middle of the day or just keeping cravings out of sight, out of mind?

Short and sweet action plan: Water, fruits, veggies.

Want to see something else short and sweet?

Today's Throwback Thursday is brought to you by a little girl who has always loved to browse the fridge, pantry or snack drawer and has resolved to make a change.

June Accountability Check

When we started this month I was high on life. We had just ended a successful 4th quarter, I met Dan's family and I was looking forward to getting after a lot of exciting work when life was supposed to slow down during the first quarter of our fiscal year.

Very quickly, I found out that the world doesn't always work the way you hope it will and that being open to change is an incredible asset to have.

That being said, June's Eight Great Goals are due for an accountability check...

via

1. I've used up 4 of my 5 early work mornings (6am) and have done a great job at sticking to it even though work has required me to have a lot of tasks complete in just a short amount of time.

2. My attempt at lifting weights hasn't gone any further than holding hand weights during some longer runs. Starting today (no, really - today!) I'm going to hit the gym and get in front of some iron. Then I'll pick it up, and I'll set it down. My muscles feel good coming off from Tough Mudder and I want them to continue to feel the burn.

3. I've hardly called any friends and really have only talked to family on the phone for Father's Day wishes. Work in progress.

4. No meal schedule for Dan and I - but I've been consistent with packing good lunches as always.

5. No, I'm such a snack fiend - more on that in tomorrow's post.

6. Only daily doubles I've completed this month were on weekends, but with a run completed this morning and weights (as mentioned in #2) this afternoon I'll be on a better schedule.

7. No time off has been scheduled and I don't know if I'll be able to make time this month.

8. I've been pretty good about eating lunch away from my desk, I just need to get better now about actually getting away from the office (conference rooms, etc) so that I can really clear my head.

Expectations lowered? Good!

I'm tracking to my running goals and I'm getting a lot of good sleep (from exhaustion, not relaxation!).

That counts, right?

TED Tuesday: Ask for Thanks

My favorite day is here, TED Talk Tuesday!

First Question: How often do you say "Thank You"?

You say it genuinely and with purpose, don't you? You say it when people provide you a service, you say it when you receive a gift you love or don't even like. You say it to your co-workers for giving you a hand and you probably even say thank you when your boss or someone in power gives you more work, just like I do.

You say it when your spouse or significant other does the laundry, and not only does the laundry but folds/steams your clothes and lays them neatly on the bed. (Thank you, Dan).

Better Question: How often do you ask someone to say "Thank You" for something you've done?

....no, me either. And why don't we?

I believe I'm worthy of a "thank you" for working 12 hours non-stop yesterday. My soul would benefit from a "thank you" for being a cheerleader, a motivator, a hard-worker, an innovator, a risk-taker, a leader, a voice, a heart, a scratching post - so why don't I ask for it?

It's not my nature to reveal myself to people and give them a view of what I need emotionally. In the video below, Laura Trice nails it on the head when she says that the reason we find it scary to ask for thanks is because someone could neglect us, they could abuse the information, or they could actually meet our need and change the way we feel. terrifying.

Ask for thanks when you do chores, ask for thanks when you go the extra mile, and make sure that you're asking your loved ones what they need thanks for. It matters.

In today's short and sweet TED talk, Laura takes three minutes of your time and asks you to "true your wheels" and be honest about the praise you need to hear. I recommend watching more than once.

Thank you, readers - your support means the world to me!

Tough Mudder #2

First I want to say another Happy Father's Day to my amazing dad! I didn't get to spend any of the weekend with him but mom treated him right and we will celebrate properly later this week. It sounds like all of you out there also have pretty remarkable dads. That makes me happy.

This weekend was Tough Mudder #2 for me and it was fun to drag Dan along - even if it meant having to watch the DVR version of the US Open when we got home.

Brooke was awesome and drove us East to the city of Fossil where we witnessed the other side of Oregon that those of us from the city often forget about. Fossil, OR is a place where there's no cell service and a simpler way of life on the ranch.

Or way of life on the ranch was anything but 'simple', but at least we had a fun stay!

Quick Hits - then I'm hitting the pillow!

  • Last year I only made it over 3 of 4 walls, this year I made it over all 4 (with 2 slanted toward us!)

  • Last year I fell multiple times on Everest and never made it up (I quit) and this year I made it up the first time!

  • Having Dan there was the extra boost I needed to get me through <3

  • Dan was a sweetheart and crashed into the water on the monkey bars before me, just to make it less embarrassing when I fell in on the first rung

  • Arctic Enema was actually a welcome relief from the warm temperatures

  • I had a 'Brain Reboot" (blacked out) for a moment through Electric Eel. I opened my eyes, heard white noise and just kept crawling.

Sorry for not many photos, my iPhone was stored in our bag pretty quick once we made it to the venue - you'll have to wait for the official race photos!

Thanks for a fun weekend, friends!

And yes, this was me on the monkey bars.

Weekend Links: Tough Mudder Style

Tuesday morning those of us who are participating in the 2013 Oregon Tough Mudder received this photo with a friendly reminder to not worry because "if you're scared...... you can pee yourself. Everyone knows you can't see pee in the mud."

Thanks Big Mudder!

This will be my second Tough Mudder event and I'll be joining my wonderful friends Brooke and her man friend Brad, while dragging Dan along for the torture fun!

In the words of Big Mudder, the vents are "hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie."

I will promise to do my best, but can see something like this happening when I go to grab the monkey bars.

Last time Brooke went Beast-Mode on the same monkey bars and I am looking forward to being inspired by her once again.

Enough from me, here's the links!

Wish us luck, last time I came home bruised from head to toe!

Throwback Thursday: Strike a Pose

We talked a lot on Tuesday about Power Posing and I hope it got you thinking as much as it got me thinking.

This week I've seen people responding differently to what my non-verbal cues are saying. As a result, I've found myself more aware of everyone else's weak shrunken bodies or confident upright gorilla-statures. I can smell that confidence from a mile away and my oh my isn't. it. sexy.

Consciously standing tall and sitting upright to convince others what to think of me has caused me to reflect on what I think about myself.

I've always had a certain showmanship about me and am not afraid of being the center of attention. I don't mind taking the lead, I don't mind making a public fool of myself and as an athlete I grew to crave the spotlight.

That person I just described is me when I'm in a large crowd, in an anonymous setting or when it really counts for making an impression.

When things get a little more personal, that picture can change... for the worse.

Let's share a few experiences from my youth:

  • I wrote notes to teachers and emails to my parents rather than having real conversations.

  • My boyfriend from 5th to 6th grade and I only talked on AIM while at school I'd have my FRIENDS pass notes to him.

  • I couldn't order my own food at a restaurant

  • Through my adult years, I still had anxiety ordering food at a drive-thru window.

  • I couldn't find the courage to speak up for myself, approach new people or make new friends until they invited me to the conversation.

What it was about these closer interactions that scared me is still a mystery and what continues to give me anxiety about personal interactions remains unanswered.

Just this past Monday I led a difficult conversation at the office in the morning, then that same evening I found myself introverted and timid walking into an Apple store for a Genius Bar appointment about my iPhone camera not working. (to which Dan shakes his head and helps me through it, but can't see what I'm so worried about)

What causes me to shine in the difficult situation and crumble in the ordinary everyday conversation? Ego I suppose.

Using the power of positive self-reinforcement through body language and visualization will really help me overcome these fears in my personal life while allowing improvement for the proud, confident and composed Jessi many see everyday.

Today's Throwback Thursday is brought to you by a little girl who's always had a little swagger in her walk and knew the right time to turn up the lights and let 'em shine.

Morning Routine

Do you remember this month's goal #1: Early work only 5 times this month?

Sorry, how early is early?

For two months I was waking up at 4:15am and showing up to the office bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 6am, which was as soon as I was allowed access into the building.

A new month and a new me.

Rather than allow myself to fall into the snooze button trap, I decided to use my familiarity with an early alarm and make the most out of it.

Long ago on the blog I wrote a post about the Benefits of Morning Exercise, and much of how I felt in October of 2012 still holds true today. Working out in the morning is amazing.

There's so much that it can bring to your day!

  • Adrenaline

  • Accomplishment

  • Less worry about when to fit a workout in

  • A need for an earlier bedtime

  • Incentive to hydrate in the evening

  • Feelings of hunger for a whole and balanced breakfast

  • Cool air to breathe

  • Calm environment to focus

  • ZERO stress about what to wear and whether your outfit matches (as long as it's street-visible!)

  • You've now earned your shower

So, for the time being, 4:15 - 5:15 is run time and self improvement time rather than the sleep time I'd originally intended to reclaim.

Now if I could just get Dan on the same schedule we'd be quite the pair!

My newest running buddies are 3lb hand weights that honestly do make my arms burn after an hour run. Aside from the burn, the added bonus is that people who see me running with hand weights believe that I'm that much more intense / intimidating / out for my own self-defense.

Who else loves to work out in the morning? What are the reasons you do it {or don't do it!}?

P.S. I've only gone in early 3 times this month - looking forward to no more if I can help it!

TED Tuesday: Power Posing

Stop for a moment and look at yourself. How are you sitting, standing, walking right now? Is your back straight, is your head up? Are you folded up and looking down?

No matter what you're doing right this moment, what you're doing at any given moment is telling a complete story about who you are, what mood you're in and how your day, week or life is going. Your body language communicates more non-verbally than anything would ever express coming out of your mouth. Perception is more often reality, which unfortunately is something you do not always control.

Your non-verbals (including your hand placement, arm position, the way your feet are pointed, whether you're taking up space or making yourself small) speak an honest story about you and your confidence, personality, and the way you're going to handle a conversation. It can impact everything from making a connection, landing a job interview or simply the way strangers may approach you.

Our non-verbals govern the way others view and perceive us, but what we explore today is whether we may be able to fool ourselves through body language to make ourselves look and feel more powerful?

Amy Cuddy in the TED Talk I've shared today recommends that we should be taking time out of our day to assume 'high-power poses' to teach our bodies to change our minds. Take two minutes out of your day as sort of a 'power boost' to open your arms out wide like a gorilla, spread those wings like an eagle, heck - even flaunt your gills like our Betta fish! It's a primal instinct to assume a large and dominating stance when we want to project power and confidence, so why don't we find it useful more often in our everyday lives?

It's okay to feel powerful. Powerful people feel more optimistic, they take more risks, they react better to stressful situations and they give others a reason to have confidence in them as a leader.

Take 20 minutes on your lunch break (or just listen) and learn how you too can benefit from power posing.

Don't fake it till you make it, fake it till you become it.

Catching Z's

This weekend was what every weekend should be.

On Friday Dan and I were able to escape the West side at 4:15pm and we headed straight to the restaurant we go to as a reward if we make it home before 6pm. This restaurant isn't necessarily our 'favorite', but it's a checkpoint for whether we suck at life or if we have a good work-life balance. Most days we don't make it home before 6pm and since that's when happy hour ends we use it as our benchmark. We haven't been able to make it for a few months so I'd say we are failing, but it makes the reward SO worth it when we're good.

What's the reward? Margarita's for $2.45!

But what's even better than happy hour after a long week's work? The sleep that comes after filling yourself with tortilla chips and margaritas.

Dan and I, no joke, were in our pajamas and sawing logs by 6:15 pm on Friday night. You'd think we would have woken up at some weird time and couldn't fall back to sleep, but no - we slept all the way until the morning. It was THE best Friday I've had in a long time. I wasn't even mad that I broke my Fuelband streak, the rest was unbeatable.

Dan had to wake up early on Saturday {sucker!} for a double-work day, but I made the most of the empty bed and slept until 9:30 before heading out for a 9 mile run.

After the run any guesses what I did? I napped. For four hours.

The rest I needed this weekend was long overdue and Dan agrees that we need to spend more time dreaming about bunnies than stressing over spreadsheets.

Of course I didn't just lay around, I had to catch up on a few runs to get to my 33 miles by June 10th checkpoint.

Running Stats:

  • Saturday: 9 Miles
  • Sunday: 9 Miles
  • Monday at 4:15am : 5 Miles

I happily wore no makeup this weekend, had the first samples of the raspberries growing in our backyard, prepped my meals for the week and pre-wrote a few posts for you. Nothing like productivity to start the week off on the right foot.

Even better was having the two golden sisters over to visit Sunday night.

What did you do this weekend? I can't wait to hear about it!

Wedding Weekend

Thank you for sticking with me this week. It's been a long one. #TWSS

From the start of the work week where Dan and I didn't arrive into PDX until 2:30am Monday, to going cross-eyed over spreadsheets Monday and Tuesday, confidently delivering my beautiful work on Wednesday and some defending of my numbers today - I'm so thrilled that it's Friday.

Let's talk about how my weekend was where I finally got to Meet the Parents and a few other special members of Dan's family!

Friday was a wild and crazy day at work and I did everything possible to get out of the building before noon so that I'd be able to connect with mom and make my flight. With a lightly packed gym bag and fully charged electronics I stepped onto the plane and took a nap instantly. Before I knew it I was in Texas for my layover and had already sat down to enjoy the sweet taste of victory for my successful Quarter.

I made it into Nashville just before midnight on Friday where Dan escorted me back to our hotel in Kentucky to a King size bed that has us wanting to make a purchase soon. We made a pit stop for a quick snack and since we were somewhere foreign Dan insisted that White Castle was the only place we could go.., so obviously there's no photo evidence of what we actually ordered and consumed. #Faturday

The very next morning came early as we were woken with an invite to breakfast, at which I immediately jumped out of bed and into get-ready-to-impress mode for the first meeting in person. Holding Dan's hand as we approached the restaurant, I instantly felt a calm aura when I saw Dan's mom, dad and sister in the hotel lobby. Before I knew it I was meeting aunts and uncles from Chicago and Switzerland, bridesmaids and former neighbors. I hadn't even finished my first cup of coffee yet!

After passing through the first round of interviews, Dan and I went on an errand run to find him razors and the finishing touches on the gift we got for the bride and groom.  Exhausted and a little taken aback by the humidity, Dan and I both took the afternoon calm to catch a quick nap.

Like magic, I was soon dressed, in the chapel and witnessing this beautiful lady walking down the aisle. Her parents gave her away in front of family and friends while shutter clicks could be heard from all around the chapel.

These are not my photos. I was too busy admiring her dress and dreaming about my own aisle moment.

Following the wedding, we took our time to get back to the reception hall for a wonderful meal and a night full of dancing. Once I dined and was ready to get my man out on the floor, we danced the night away and had everyone in the room thinking that we'd taken lessons together. From there we laughed, I made new facebook friends, I even grabbed the microphone when the timing was right and had family members asking Dan "Where did she come from?"

Sunday morning came too soon and we said our goodbyes at the Louisville airport. Once we were through security we treated ourselves to "two means four" whiskey orders to celebrate a successful first meeting of hopefully many. Other airport antics included planks, walking around, delay after delay and finally coming home to my amazing parents who picked us up at 2:30 in the morning with the golden sisters - and with a special made lunch in hand.

Such a wonderful weekend, thank you for a wonderful time Dan and family! Congrats, Emily!
